Oh Donna, Donna, Donna. You were one of my favorites. Yours were the only songs my mom would sing along to during family road trips. You staunchly defended your support of gay rights, even when the media tried claiming otherwise. Hell, “Last Dance” was the last dance at my prom. Rest in peace, my dear.

Oddly enough, I actually asked myself earlier, “How will Pretty Colors react to Obama’s gay marriage decision?” Answer above.

It doesn’t stop me from wanting a companion. But such is life, and there’s so much to live for, and someday that day will come. Like the Plain White T’s Song- “I’m gonna be happy someday”, I think that’s my theme song for life right now. Not that I love life right now, but there’s so much to change.

You’ve been gone for so many years, and yet still hold such a tight grip on my heart.

Ok, Bob. It’s my turn for a story.

I’m 15 and late for French class or swim practice or private music lessons or whatever godforsaken extracurricular activity that kept me that day from Being Young. I bike down J Street, zooming past the bus stop on the corner of Drexel Drive. There you are, wandering under the bus sign in your bright blue trenchcoat. Your galoshed feet skip over rain puddles, headphones probably blasting the Plain White T’s. You never look up, engrossed in your too-deep-for-a-13-year-old thoughts. There was always so much sadness around you. But from that pain also emanated a strong heart and so, so much potential. In the few moments I saw you there, that wonderful spirit was glowing brightly and couldn’t help but smile.

In the nine years since this awful fucking tragedy, your friends have each blossomed to hurdle-leaping, country-traversing, good-doing young adults. We all miss you, Bob. Barely a day goes by when we don’t think of you. It’s high time we put those memories to good use. I’m in for the book.

My favorite song off of “The Family Jewels.” A “Thriller” throwback possibly sponsored by Burger King? Not necessarily a bad thing…

Wait. Wait. J.K. Simmons does the voice of Tenzin on “The Legend of Korra”? Ok, done bought and sold.

Kudos, NPR. Now could more news organizations use these sort of standards when reporting on LGBT stories? Giving equal weighting to facts and hate speech is nowhere near a balance.
